It is one of the largest film festivals in East Asia. The first festival was held from October 7 to 14, 1993, and was held every two years until 2001. In 2003, there was no festival due to the outbreak of SARS. Since its inception in 1993, the Shanghai International Film Festival has become the only international category A film festival in China. SIFF organized by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and Television and Shanghai Media & Entertainment Group.
