5 Catalan films selected at Toronto International Film Festival


The festival will take place from the 9th to the 18th of September. Four Catalan productions have been selected for this year’s edition of Toronto Film Festival. 

Official Competition (Mediapro) from Argentinian directors Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn will take part in the Special Presentations section which welcomes high-profile premieres and the world’s leading filmmakers.Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas star in the film that revolves around a multimillionaire businessman who decides, in search of transcendence and social prestige, to make a film that leaves a mark.

The remaining 3 Catalan productions have been selected for The Contemporary World Cinema section which hosts compelling stories and global perspectives: 

  • Costa Brava, Lebanon Lastor Media) by Mounia Akl tells the story of the Badry family who, fed up with the pollution and corruption, has chosen to live in total isolation in the picturesque mountain of Lebanon
  • Sis dies corrents (Distinto Films, El Kinògraf) by Neus Ballús. In order to get through his one-week probationary contract, a young Moroccan plumber has to deal with equally eccentric colleagues and customers. 
  • Out of Sync (Nadir Films) by Juanjo Giménez. C. is sound designer. The studio is her last refuge: a place where she can set aside for a while her damaged relationships. And she’s starting to be, literally, out-of-sync. 

Finally, Las infantas/The Infantas ,directed by Andrea Herrera Català (Amor Lujo) that is part of the Shortcat 2021, the program for the international promotion of Catalan short film, has been selected to participate in the Short Cut section. The film will have its world premiere at the festival.
