The San Sebastian Film Festival will take place between the 17th and 25th of September. The festival will be held on site, but the Industry space will undertake a hybrid format, becoming both an online and an on site activity. A total of 12 Catalan productions have been included in the festival’s line up.
El buen patrón/The Good Boss, by Fernando León de Aranoa (The Mediapro Studio, Reposado Producciones Cinematográficas) will compete in the festival’s Official Selection. With Javier Bardem in the lead role, The Good Boss becomes a satire about personal and professional relationships. It will have its world premiere in San Sebastian.
Daniel Monzón’s latest feature film, Las leyes de la frontera/Outlaws (Ikiru Films, Atresmedia Cine, La Terraza Films, Las Leyes de la Frontera AIE) will close the Official Selection out of competition. The movie is an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Javier Cercas. The feature film is set in the summer of 1978. Nacho Cañas, a withdrawn 17-year-old student and somewhat of a misfit, is living in Girona. When he meets two young outlaws from the city’s red light district, Zarco and Tere, he soon finds himself caught up in a love triangle that inevitably spirals into a life of petty crime that will alter his life forever.
A strong Catalan presence is shown in the Perlak Section, a selection of the year’s best feature films, unreleased in Spain, which have received critical acclaim and/or awards at other international festivals. Competencia oficial/Official Competition, from Argentinian directors Gastón Duprat y Mariano Cohn, is a tragicomedy led by Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martínez, and produced by The Mediapro Studio. The movie will open the Perlak Section and. In search of transcendence and social prestige, a multimillionaire businessman decides to make a film to leaves a mark. For this, he hires the best: a stellar team consisting of famed filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penelope Cruz) and two well-known actors, both of whom are huge talents, but with even bigger egos: Hollywood actor Felix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and the radical theater actor Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez). Both legends, but not exactly best friends. Through a series of increasingly eccentric tests designed by Lola, Felix and Ivan must face not only each other, but also with their own legacies.
The competitive section called Nest, dedicated to shorts made by cinema students from around the world, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has selected Podul de Piatrâ/Pont de pedra, by Artur-Pol Camprubí. This is a 15L production, with the collaboration of Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.
Mediterráneo/Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea, by Marcel Barrena (Lastor Media,Arcadia Motion Pictures,,Fasten Films, Heretic, Cados Producciones AIE) will premiere during. The gala held by RTVE. Led by Eduard Fernández, Dani Rovira, Anna del Castillo, Sergi López and Alex Monner, the film tells the origins story of the ONG Open Arms.
Another five Catalan productions will participate in the Made in Spain section, which includes the most recent feature films of the Spanish film industry: Destello Bravío, by Ainhoa Rodríguez (Eddie Saeta, Tentación Cabiria), El año del descubrimiento/The Year of the Discovery, by Luís López Carrasco (LaCima Producciones, Alina Film, Magnetica Creative Lab, Cromagnon Producciones), El ventre del mar/The Belly of the Sea, by Agustí Villaronga (Testamento Producciones, La Perifèrica Produccions, Link-Up Barcelona), Sediments, by Adrián Silvestre (Adrián Silvestre Films, Testamento Producciones) and Un blues ara Teheran/Tehran Blues, by Javier Tolentino (Eddie Saeta, Quatre films).
The debut film of Igor Lagarreta, Todas las lunas/All the Moons (Arcadia Motion Pictures, Kowalski Films, Noodles Production, Priss & Batty Films, Ilargia Films AIE), that had a world premiere in the Canadian Fantasia International Film Festival, will also be included in the Zinemira section, dedicated to the Basque cinema. Tadeo Jones: King Midas’ Secret, by Enrique Gato (Ikiru Films, Telecinco Cinema, Telefónica Studios, 4 Cats Pictures, Lightbox Animation Studios) will be screened within a programme dedicated to schools through the Belodromoa ikastetxeetaninitiative.
Lastly, the competitive section named Zabaltegi-Tabakalera will have its share of Catalan talent presence. Laura Rius, co-director of Les amigues de l'Àgata/Agatha’s Friends, will present her film produced in France, Les filles due feu/Las del fuego. The Industry WIP Europa works towards the development of films in post-production. In the frame of this space's activity, the debut feature film of the Catalan director Amat Vallmajor del Pozo, Misión a Marte, has been selected. He was an alumni in Creation at Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola.
Parallel to the festival, The Lau Haizetara Forum will be held between the 20th and 22nd of September, in which five Catalan projects will participate:
