Both these productions by new talents found their place in international competition at Karlovy Vary. Pretextos (Pretexts - Ovideo TV) is the debut feature film by actor and director Sylvia Munt, already established as a director of TV movies. In the documentary section, Hoy el día se repite diferente tells the story of the last six months of a drug addicts's life.
These two titles were joined by Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña's La habitación de Fermat (Fermat's Room - Notro Films) in the Variety Critic's Choice section, and, as part of Another View, En la ciudad de Sylvia (In the City of Sylvia) by Jose Luis Guerin (Eddie Saeta) and Mà morta truca la porta (Dead Hand Knocking - Diagonal TV, Ficción Producciones, Televisió de Catalunya, Televisión de Galicia).
Catalan participation at Karlovy Vary this year is up on previous years (compare two features in 2007 to this year's five). Representatives of the makers of each film will travel to the festival, along with Antoni Lladó, general director of the Institut Català de les Indústries Culturals (Catalan Department for Culture), and Albert Ganduxer, director of Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia.
