Though it is not yet official, in just a few days the next two most important dates on the Class A festival calendar, Karlovy Vary and Locarno, will be announcing their line-ups, with the considerable representation of the Catalan industry. Thanks to the interviews hosted by Catalan Films & TV during the Cannes Festival, we were afforded inside information on the significant upcoming participation of Catalan films in the different sections of both the Czech and the Swiss events. Moreover, we must add that Catalan producer Lluís Miñarro will be forming part of the jury at Locarno.
These two events, which are included among the FIAPF's list of twelve Class A film festivals, are known for their tendency to support an auteur cinema that is far closer to the art house than to commercial film productions. The programme directors of Karlovy Vary and Locarno have coincided in their recognition of the Catalan film industry as a breeding ground for extremely interesting talent, which is always present in their theatres. Thus, their slates have included Catalan filmmakers such as Marc Recha, José Luis Guerín, Pere Portabella, and more recently, Roser Aguilar and Ramon Costafreda.
