The program for the international promotion of Catalan short films promoted by Catalan Films & TV, the internationalization brand of the Department of Culture - ICEC, reaches its fourteenth edition with a careful selection of short films chosen from more than 60 productions presented in this year's call.
The Shortcat program consists of the selection, by a committee of professionals and experts from the world of cinema and the national and international audiovisual industry, of 7 short films that will be presented at the most important international markets and festivals and aimed especially at programmers, distributors, buyers, institutions and the press.
Apart from the promotion and diffusion of the catalogue, Catalan Films & TV articulates a specific distribution strategy for each production and for one year it will be responsible for the submission of the selected short films in the main international and national festivals.
In this edition, the jury has been composed by: Cosimo Santoro (international sales agent at The Open Reel), Èrika Sánchez (director and producer at Antivaho Cinematográfica), Mireia Graell (producer at Ringo Media), Stefan Ivancic (programmer at Locarno International Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam) and Alice Kharoubi (programmer at Festival de Cannes).

This edition will also include a guest short film, Forastera by Lucía Aleñar Iglesias (produced by Distinto Films and La Perifèrica Produccions. Distribution and international sales by Marvin&Wayne) which was selected in the last edition of the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival 2020 and has so far cultivated a remarkable career at international and national festivals.
Shortcat and the international positioning of the Catalan New Wave
The Shortcat program is an international benchmark for quality Catalan short film production. Some of the filmmakers who have been part of these fourteen editions are Juanjo Giménez, Laura Ferrés, Clara Roquet, Elena Trapé, Pau Bacardit, Anna Solanas, Marc Riba, David Victori, Alejandro Marzoa, Alex Brendemhül, Alex Lora, Lluís Miñarro, Lluis Galter, Roser Aguilar, Fernando Pomares, Patricia Font, Nely Reguera, Èrika Sánchez or Xavier Marrades, among others. Internationally recognized filmmakers who have been selected and awarded at the most important festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Tribeca, at the European Film Academy or the first global YouTube contest. This sample of quality and international interest endorses the good health of the Catalan short film and places it as one of the most important and successful cultural disciplines in our country.
