The 74th edition of the Festival de Cannes will take place from 6 -17 July after the event was cancelled last year due to the global pandemic.
Catalan cinema at Festival de Cannes
La Semaine de la Critique - the Cannes parallel selection dedicated to discovering new talents - has announced its line up that includes Clara Roquet's first feature film Libertad, produced by Lastor Media, Avalon and Bulletproof Cupid. The film is a colorful coming of age looking to female youth and friendship, and tells the story of Nora. Nora's quiet life is turned upside down when, during her summer holidays, this naïve 15-year old comes across Libertad, also 15. This new, intense friendship between the two utterly different girls will guide them towards adolescence,
Clara Roquet is a scriptwriter and director. The project was selected at several international coproduction forums and labs as Sundance Institute Mediterranean Screenwriters Workshop, Mia Market Roma o el Foro de Coproducción Europa-America Latina del Festival de San Sebastián.
For its part, short film La caída del vencejo/The Fall of the Swif, by Gonzalo Quincoces (Escac Films) has been selected for Cinéfondation that selects twenty short and medium-length films submitted by film schools from all over the world. The film, set in Bilbao, 1984, tells the story of Kepa, a young working-class man who lives, burdened, in an overwhelming family environment. Having met someone, and fed up with his situation, he decides to pack his bag and run away. On the same night he intends to leave, his friends prepare an attack in protest of the closure of the shipyards where they worked.
Catalan projects selected at Marché du Film
Winnipeg, el vaixell de l'esperança/Winnipeg, Seed of Hope, animation feature film directed by Elio Quiroga y Beñat Beitia (La Ballesta, Marmita Films, El otrofilm, Dibulitoon Studio) and based on Laura Martel’s graphic novel, was presented at the Pitching Territory Focus at MIFA Annecy 2020. Now, it has been selected to participate in the Animation Days - Animation Works-in-Progress- Chile. Animation Days programm was launched in 2019 in partnership with the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Talks, panel discussions, animation screenings and networking feature the event.
Also, El tresor de Barracuda/The Treasure of Barracuda, directed by Adrià Garcia and produced by Inicia Films, has been selected to participate in the Animation Days-Speed Meetings. The film tells the story of Captain Barracuda who is obsessed with finding Phineas Crane's treasure, the most valuable and sought after by all the pirates of the Caribbean. To achieve this, he will need the help of Sparks, a girl who pretends to be a boy in order to survive among the savage members of the Barracuda crew. Finding a Phineas Crane memoir will be the key to reaching the long-awaited treasure and also Sparks' lifeline, since she is the only one who can read on the ship and, therefore, the only one capable of deciphering that "Letter map" that the found manuscript supposes.
Finally, one Catalan project will be presented at VeeR VR Cinema, a cornerstone of Cannes XR, a selection of the most immersive and innovative VR works.Symphony, by Igor Cortadellas, presented by La Caixa Foundation, is an immersive audiovisual experience that takes spectators on a journey through emotions and music. Spectators are able to experience and truly understand classical music as never before, entering the interior of an instrument or feeling like musicians in an orchestra. They enjoy compositions by Beethoven, Mahler and Bernstein performed by Gustavo Dudamel and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Catalan films at Marché du Film
For its part, Marché du Film will be held in parallel to Festival de Cannes and will gather film industry professionals from all around the globe. Catalan Films will be attending the market with a stand where all Catalan companies will be welcomed. Also, Catalan Films will have its own virtual booth to promote film commissions and film locations and films selected for the festival and companies attending, and an online screening room called Catalan Cinema, where it will screen Catalan films seeking sales agents and distribution at festivals. This would be a magnificent opportunity to know the richness of recent Catalan productions.
Shortcat 2021 at Cannes
Catalan short films will also be present in Cannes, at the Short Film Corner, a meeting point for the short-film industry. The Shortcat 2021, the program for the international promotion of Catalan short films promoted by Catalan Films will be available for international buyers and distributors:
Finally, Esteve Soler one of the most internationally successful Catalan playwrights, will be part of the Fipresci Jury that present three prizes: to films in the official competition, in the section “Un Certain Regard” and in the parallel sections “Directors’ Fortnight” and “Critics’ Week”.
